Release Notes for ∑ Chess 4.0.1 Lite
____________________________________________
September 13, 1998
∑ Chess 4.0.1 Lite is a limited, freeware version of the commercial
release. ∑ Chess 4.0.1 Lite may be freely distributed, but only in its
original form – We respectfully ask you not to modify or remove any of
the sample games/collections/libraries/endgames before distributing.
1. System Requirements
∑ Chess requires an Apple Macintosh or MacOS compatible meeting the following
requirements:
• Processor: Motorola 68020/68030/68040 or PowerPC 601/603/604/G3
• System Software: Version 7.x or later.
• Monitor: 640 x 480 resolution or higher with at least 16 colours or grays.
However, 256 colours or more is strongly recommended. With only 16
colours/grays you won't be able to use the 3D board and only some of the piece
sets and boards in 2D mode are available.
• Memory: ∑ Chess needs a minimum of 1.6 Mb memory, but 2 Mb or more is
recommended in order to take full advantage of the transposition tables. With only
1.6 Mb RAM, ∑ Chess has little or no room for transposition tables and cannot
load large opening libraries. At least 2.7 Mb is needed in order to use the 3D board,
but 3 or 4 Mb (or more) is recommended.
∑ Chess is compatible with the Greg's Buttons control panel, as well as with the
Aaron and Kaleidoscope extensions.
If you are using a PowerMac with the Connectix “Speed Doubler” utility installed,
∑ Chess will run up to 3 times faster than on a PowerMac without “Speed Doubler”!
2. Limited/disabled Features
Several features of interest to serious chess players are limited or
disabled in this free version:
• Collections can contain a maximum of 1000 games, compared to
the 10.000 games in the commercial version.
• Libraries cannot be saved, but you can still try out the Opening
Library Editor.
• Only the KQKR and KBNK endgame databases are included. The
commercial version contains several other 4-piece endings.
• Automatic game annotation/analysis are disabled for collections.
Thus ∑ Chess Lite will only annotate one game at a time.
• Diagrams are not printed when printing collections/online chess
books.
• Transposition tables are limited to 10 Mb, whereas the commercial
version can handle transposition tables up to a size of 80 Mb.
• Only one 3D board is available.
