  1. Release Notes for ∑ Chess 4.0.1 Lite

  6. ∑ Chess 4.0.1 Lite is a limited, freeware version of the commercial
  7. release. ∑ Chess 4.0.1 Lite may be freely distributed, but only in its
  8. original form – We respectfully ask you not to modify or remove any of
  9. the sample games/collections/libraries/endgames before distributing.

  11. 1. System Requirements
  12.  
  13. ∑ Chess requires an Apple Macintosh or MacOS compatible meeting the following
  14. requirements:
  15.  
  16. • Processor: Motorola 68020/68030/68040 or PowerPC 601/603/604/G3
  17.  
  18. • System Software: Version 7.x or later.
  19.  
  20. • Monitor: 640 x 480 resolution or higher with at least 16 colours or grays.
  21. However, 256 colours or more is strongly recommended. With only 16
  22. colours/grays you won't be able to use the 3D board and only some of the piece
  23. sets and boards in 2D mode are available.
  24.  
  25. • Memory: ∑ Chess needs a minimum of 1.6 Mb memory, but 2 Mb or more is
  26. recommended in order to take full advantage of the transposition tables. With only
  27. 1.6 Mb RAM, ∑ Chess has little or no room for transposition tables and cannot
  28. load large opening libraries. At least 2.7 Mb is needed in order to use the 3D board,
  29. but 3 or 4 Mb (or more) is recommended.

  31. ∑ Chess is compatible with the Greg's Buttons control panel, as well as with the
  32. Aaron and Kaleidoscope extensions.

  34. If you are using a PowerMac with the Connectix “Speed Doubler” utility installed,
  35. ∑ Chess will run up to 3 times faster than on a PowerMac without “Speed Doubler”!

  37. 2. Limited/disabled Features
  38.  
  39. Several features of interest to serious chess players are limited or
  40. disabled in this free version:
  41.  
  42. • Collections can contain a maximum of 1000 games, compared to
  43.    the 10.000 games in the commercial version.
  44. • Libraries cannot be saved, but you can still try out the Opening
  45.    Library Editor.
  46. • Only the KQKR and KBNK endgame databases are included. The
  47.    commercial version contains several other 4-piece endings.
  48. • Automatic game annotation/analysis are disabled for collections.
  49.    Thus ∑ Chess Lite will only annotate one game at a time.
  50. • Diagrams are not printed when printing collections/online chess
  51.    books.
  52. • Transposition tables are limited to 10 Mb, whereas the commercial
  53.    version can handle transposition tables up to a size of 80 Mb.
  54. • Only one 3D board is available.
